DETROIT (TNND) — Detroit police officer Cameron Richardson was killed in an off-duty hit-and-run car crash Sunday, the Detroit Police Department announced.
Richardson had been with the department for one year and previously served as an Army Ranger. Police said Richardson was driving home from work when a van collided with his Jeep Wrangler, causing it to roll over.
The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene, the department added.
A GoFundMe organized for Richardson’s two daughters describes him as a “bright, adventurous, and amazing soul who touched the lives of everyone he met.” That fund had raised over $5,000 as of Monday morning.
Interim Police Chief Todd Bettison described Richardson as “one of Detroit’s finest” in a community briefing Sunday.
